The Different Types of Rollers for Soil Compaction Equipment

With the innovation of technology, a lot of things get done easier and faster. This change is also applicable to the construction industry wherein soil compaction equipment and the different types of rollers became available. The use of the mentioned tools will greatly depend on the soil moisture conditions and soil types.

Two Major Types of Soil Compaction Equipment

  1. Light soil compacting equipment

Here, the equipment will be used for soil compacting small areas wherein less effort is needed. To name a few, below are some of the light compaction equipment that is commonly used.

  • Vibro Tampers

This equipment, on the other hand, is useful for compaction of small spaces in confined areas. Vibro tampers is suitable for compaction of all soil types through vibrations set up on a base plate by an activated spring by using an engine driven reciprocating mechanism. They weigh between 50 to 100 kilos and is often manually guided.

  • Rammers

This equipment is used for compacting small areas; it provides impact load to the soil. Rammers are light and can be operated either by hand or with the use of a machine, diesel rammer is one example. Its base size can be as follow: 15cm x 15cm, 20cm x 20cm, or higher. This equipment is very useful for compacting cohesive soils or other soils.

  • Vibrating Plate Compactors

This tool is often used for coarse soil compaction with 4-8 percent fines. It works for small areas. Its weight usually vary from 100 kilograms to 2-tonne with plate areas between 0.16 m2 and 1.6 m2, check plate compactor for sale for further information.

  1. Heavy soil compacting equipment

For the various types of soils that are located in large areas, heavy soil compacting equipment is used. This machine is often selected based on the types of soil and by the soil’s moisture content. Below are its different types:

  • Sheepsfoot Rollers

These rollers are helpful if you are working for compacting fine grained soils like silty clays and heavy clays in the following areas: embankments, dams, sub grade layers in railroad and pavements construction projects.

Sheepsfoot rollers have two variations, the vibratory and static types. The former are used for compaction of soil with sand-gravel mixes and of all fine-grained soils. In general, they are useful for the compaction of sub grade layers in rail and road projects.

  • Smooth Wheeled Rollers

Smooth wheeled rollers, on the other hand, are divided into the following types: the vibrating smooth wheeled rollers and the static smooth wheeled rollers. They’re generally used for finishing the upper surface of the soil.

The most suitable soils for these type of roller are well graded gravel, sand, asphalt, crushed rock and others where crushing is needed. If the soil doesn’t require too much pressure for compaction, this tool is used, vibratory roller for sale is a good example. Don’t use it for the compaction of uniform sands.

  • Grid Rollers

The main use of grid rollers are in sub base and sub grade in road constructions for the compaction of  well-graded coarse soils and weathered rocks. And keep in mind that these rollers are not suitable for uniform soils, silty clays, and clayey soils.
